Acupuncture for Menopause

Acupuncture for Menopause

With so many Baby Boomers reaching their golden years, it’s no wonder they are looking to acupuncture for menopause relief.  We are a society of seekers in the quest for alternatives to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and all of its risks.  No longer are we going to stand by and take what someone else deems good for us without exploring options and alternatives.  Acupuncture for menopause is safe and effective in dealing with many of the menopause symptoms we regard as a normal part of the process.

While everyone has their own story, many women are clear in their personal dealings with menopausal symptoms.  They can include hot flashes, decreased libido, insomnia, night sweats, headaches, vaginal dryness and moodiness.  Some of them may start around 40 years of age when the routine of menstrual cycles starts to change and become more irregular.  This stage of change is referred to as perimenopause.   Mood swings may seem more intense and hot flashes may first appear at this stage.

Acupuncture for Menopause – Help for Hot Flashes

According to Chrisianne Northrup, MD in her book titled The Wisdom of Menopause, hot flashes are common in 70 to 85 percent of all perimenopausal women.  While some women may barely notice them, others may actually lose sleep or deal with depression because of their hot flashes.  They may be noticed as a general warmth accelerating to intense heat or they could drive you to wanting to remove as much clothing as possible while running for a glass of cold water or a walk out in the snow.   Your face might turn red, your heart rate might rise and you may even notice a tingling in your hands.  There is no exact description for every woman or every hot flash.  They might  come on frequently and then lessen a bit or they may show up during times of stress or the same time frame each day.

The reason behind these often uncomfortable symptoms has to do with the body’s hormone production levels as they adjust for the transition out of child bearing into the age of wisdom.  The transition through menopause may not come easily for most women and while HRT was thought to smooth the way, it has been associated with some very scary side effects that include increased risk for cancer.  Quality of life is certain to change as weight gain and body appearance, thinning hair, osteoporosis and heart disease may become part of the natural aging process but there are payoffs to going the natural route and using alternative therapies in addition to acupuncture.

According to a study in the British Medical Journal, acupuncture for menopause has successfully reduced the severity of hot flashes.  They make the suggestion that acupuncture boosts the production of endorphins which may stabilize the body’s ability to control temperature. While they caution that this was a small study they also suggest that the traditional Chinese approach in using acupuncture for menopause could be an effective choice for women who have concerns about using HRT.

Acupuncture for Menopause – Hope for Those Who Suffer

This is just one study in a growing collection of ongoing research that is uncovering the science behind acupuncture and the benefits of its use for menopausal women.  With so few choices in the area of natural menopause assistance, doesn’t it make sense to try something with no side effects and proven results.
